The Stocking Droppers March The Streets of London

Burlesque dancers protest against Camden council ban

Camden council back tracks on its decision to class burlesque dancers alongside strippers and lap dancers after an army of women take to the streets

WHEN an army of burlesque dancers hits the streets of London, it seems there is little that can stand in their way.

Around 100 performers marched in protest towards Camden Town Hall yesterday, the council hastily backed down over its decision to class them alongside strippers and lap dancers.

Venues in the borough had been banned from holding burlesque shows without an adult entertainment licence, despite vigorous protests that there was no nudity.

But as the women with placards reading: "Don’t Be Prude, It’s Not Rude" began massing outside the town hall, opposite St Pancras Station, officials had a rapid change of heart.

Following a meeting with protesters licensing officials issued a new statement, which stated: "Burlesque performance in its widest form can include various art forms and this alone would not require a licence. The council’s concern is with any performance which may involve nudity".
